Link Road mural restoration

In partnership with Peterborough Presents, Street Arts Hire and artists Tony Nero, Katie Scott and Process Smith, we are currently restoring this beautiful mural in Millfield, Peterborough. Painted in 1982 by artist Francis Gomilla and students from Peterborough Technical College, the mural was created in memory of Roger Brooks, City Councillor and Chairman of Urban Renewal Action Committee. The mural features people who lived in the area at the time and we have been honoured to meet some of the characters whilst completing the restoration. The team have received so much warm, positive feedback and we’d like to say a big ‘thank you’ to Millfield residents for all the love they have shown the project. Before and after photos of the final mural will follow soon.

Making of ‘Mark Can’t Rap’

Mark Grist character design sketches

We started the project with a series of sketches to flesh out the character of Mark Grist and develop an art style for the animation.

We continued to develop the character and art style by rendering a key scene from the script, where Mark is surrounded by Zombies. The rough sketches from our initial plans were re-drawn in Illustrator using basic shapes with consideration to how these would be animated. At this stage we also tested out some potential colour palettes which led us to the bold black, white & red theme that we finally chose.

The final colour palette was inspired by iconic music video’s like ‘Go With The Flow’ by Queens Of The Stone Age and ‘Seven Nation Army’ by The White Stripes.

Monster character design

The monster design was harder to crack as the script called for a large fire-breathing creature with ape like characteristics, that also had to be an evolution of the Mark Grist character. We settled on a large Godzilla inspired character with long arms like an ape and an exposed skull to represent it’s human side.

Animation

By using basic shapes to create the character designs we were able to easily create animation rigs using After Effects & rubber hose 2.0. The Zombie scene was once again used as our testing ground to see how everything would come together.

We also created some frame by frame animation to give some scenes in the video that special ‘hand drawn’ touch. A key scene from the video that employed this technique can be seen below with our original hand drawn frames on the left and the final rendered animation on the right.

IT’S HERE! Your chance to get paid, get published and be part of a feminist risograph zine championing undiscovered local creativity.

We’re looking for creative women and other marginalised genders to expand the face of Pereborough’s art scene and offer a wealth of unique perspectives, especially new and emerging or previously hidden talent. Work must be 2D and work well small scale. It must look great in monotone or 2-colour and be engaging and unique.

Typographic art at the Lido

Peterborough’s beloved Lido has a very fond place in our hearts. All of us rhinos have enjoyed whiling away long hot days in the cool sparkling water. We were over the moon to be asked to create some new typography to adorn the walls. Local Poet Keely Mills and Peterborough Presents brought together a group of amazing local poets and invited them to spend time at the Lido, writing about their experiences in residency. The resulting poems are spectacular and it has been an honour and a pleasure to immortalise them on the walls to celebrate the Lido’s 80th anniversary.

The Lido is a striking Art Deco outdoor swimming pool with sunbathing terraces. We chose a combination of three different styles of type appropriate to the architecture of the building. The artwork is decorative so that it can be enjoyed by all visitors to the Lido, whatever their age, nationality or level of literacy. We selected colours that would harmonise with the existing decor and the wonderful iridescent cyan of the water.

Our Lincoln Road

What an amazing experience!

Hundreds of local residents, mountains of cake, 30 metres of wall and around 300 different stencils.

“Our Lincoln Road” is a mural celebrating pride in the Millfield area. Over a windy week in August, we transformed a whopping stretch of rough, rendered wall, using colourful shapes and messages celebrating local life.

The project began in January. We won a bid to create a mural for Lincoln Road that reflected its richness and diversity, so we asked local people to describe their culture. We held informal workshops to discuss the sayings they learned from their parents, the songs that moved them, the games they played as kids, in order to investigate what made them feel proud and at home.

Again and again, people made reference to cross-cultural songs, sayings and games. When participants discussed experiences that they had in common, we could see them become immediately more animated and excited. We decided to shift the focus of the project to celebrate the things that really make local residents connect with each other. Their shared interests.

As the project grew, we discovered local heroes who had made an impact in the area, people who had dedicated their working lives to making a difference for others. We asked them “What unites the people of Lincoln Road?”. We photographed the heroes and drew outlines of them. We crafted their words into typographic arrangements that filled the shape of their portraits as silhouettes.

We developed a colourful, geometric pattern to work with the silhouettes. An initial explosion of shapes represents people moving to the area, arriving with their own distinct, bold shape, overlapping one another. The shapes burst out and flow along the piece, interrupted by the silhouettes. They hang in coloured groups around the heroes, drifting away, blending with the next set of colours, and the next. This interplay reflects the way the local heroes bring different groups together, help them to establish and make connections with other groups. The mural ends with the question, “WHAT UNITES US? As a large statement piece of typography, inviting viewers to answer the question for themselves.

We have never had so many people say how much they liked the work. A massive thank-you to everyone who stopped and encouraged us.
