The Pirate Who Didn’t Like Baths

This project began as a series of whimsical illustrations created to bring Mark Grist’s story, The Pirate Who Didn’t Like Baths, to life. Originally intended as a children’s book, the project evolved into a Jackanory-style video, with Mark presenting and narrating the tale himself.

The story follows a pirate who refuses to bathe for years, creating a hilariously grimy reputation, a sticky layer of armor, and chaos on the high seas. With a blend of absurd humor, exaggerated action, and darkly comic twists, the narrative allowed for bold, imaginative visual storytelling.

Creative Approach

  • Illustration Style: The visuals embrace playful exaggeration and vibrant character design, emphasizing the pirate’s grotesque yet comical features as his hygiene—or lack thereof—spirals out of control.
  • Narrative Animation: While the original illustrations were static, the Jackanory-style format added movement, timing, and rhythm, syncing with Mark’s narration to enhance comedic beats and story progression.
  • Audience Engagement: Combining storytelling, illustration, and animation created a hybrid format that appeals to both children and adults, preserving the mischievous spirit of the original story while highlighting the absurdity and humor of the pirate’s antics.

Outcome

The final video transforms Mark Grist’s story into a lively, immersive experience. Audiences enjoy a dynamic blend of illustration, narration, and subtle animation that brings the chaotic and hilarious world of the pirate to life—turning a simple children’s book concept into an entertaining, visual storytelling adventure.
