A fantastic opportunity arose in our neighbouring city of Cambridge, to design mural designs to decorate the walls of a brand new underpass. This underpass would be part of the new Chisholm Trail, a new walking and cycling route between Cambridge Station and Cambridge North Station.
To make something long lasting, easy to maintain and durable we worked with a local printing company who brought our digital designs to life on aluminium boards which were secured to the new concrete walls.
The artwork references the history of the area in which the underpass is located and highlights the positive impact that the new trail will have in Cambridge.
Taking inspiration from the nearby historic buildings, one of which dates back to 1125, we stylised elements of architecture and also colours sampled from the interior and exterior stone of the local Leper Chapel. Other important elements we were able to have express within the design are Stourbridge Fair and joggers and cyclists to represent users of the new route. The poem that flows through the graphic is by the hugely talented Michael Rosen.
